Good deeds

Sir, – I was on the 31A bus in Raheny in Dublin. Two stops later, a number of elderly people boarded. They were mostly travelling alone.

Without any prompting, people of all ages simply stood up and offered their seats. The elderly were both grateful and cheerful. Their smiles were mirrored by those who volunteered (and those who simply observed). In that moment, there was a palpable feeling of wellbeing for all passengers.

At the end of the journey, people alighted from the bus with final smiles and goodbyes (including those addressed to the driver).

It was a wonderful few minutes. As a society, all is not lost. There is hope. – Yours, etc,
