Sir, – Referring to the recent legislation on gender quotas, TP Kindlon (March 26th) states “It would be good if some of their male counterparts starting taking an interest in men’s issues”. He makes a very valid point.

Over the years the male-dominated Dáil has set up two costly commissions on the status of women; given millions of euro to women’s support groups, vets legislation to assess its impact on women and funds a National Women’s Council to promote women’s interests.

If Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan’s legislation brings about a gender balance in Dáil Éireann, will such attention and resources be devoted to the interests and well-being of men? I doubt it. – Yours, etc,
