Sir, - In these days of high legal costs and "cosy cartels", I was amused when told by a solicitor who is a "notary public" that he was obliged to charge £25 per signature - and that discounting was forbidden.

Eight documents at £25 each amounted to £200 for less than ten minute's "work".

An American friend was horrified - the services of a notary public are free in the US.

I neglected to ask the "legal eagle" where the discount prohibition originated but I have no doubt that it was from the Law Society or some other "cosy cartel" body. - Yours, etc.,
