FOOTBALL FINAL AT CROKE PARK

Sir, I attended the All Ireland football final last Sunday, having a ticket for the Canal End. After a very enjoyable match, we attempted to leave the grounds along with 66,000 others. There were no marked exits at the Canal End, and eventually we were pulled up on to the pitch and left via the tunnel on the Canal End.

When we got on to the street, we tried to go right on to Clonliffe Road. However people leaving from Hill 16 were trying to go left, and we found ourselves in a sea of people and unable to move. This was the situation for about half an hour. There were several elderly people and children who were distressed my friend, who is three months pregnant, was about to faint. We turned back, and eventually we found some space and made our way out of the crowd.

In all that time, we did not see one steward or GAA official. The GAA took ticket receipts of more than £1 million, yet made no obvious effort to get people safely out of the grounds. I wish to protest strongly at its neglect of its fans. Yours, etc., Victoria Villas, Clontarf, Dublin 3.
