Sir, - Maybe some good will come from the BSE/CJD scare after all? Further to comments from Senator Feargal Quinn, former Agriculture Minister, Joe Walsh TD, has now added his support to the need for an independent certifying organisation to oversee food safety (April 18th). Such an organisation is urgently required, particularly in relation to the meat industry.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry has been less than transparent in its handling of the BSE problem and its policies are clearly dominated by producer interests. Open disclosure of monitoring procedures and findings might do more for consumer confidence than expensive marketing campaigns. - Yours, etc.,
