Madam, - As one of the over-50s referred to in your Editorial "Myths about the over-50s" ( September 12th), I was wondering what you meant by "à la carte Catholics".

Our Church, at certain moments in its life, as at Trent 1546-7, has called for general councils involving all the bishops of the Church, who collegially make decisions for us all. Such a council was Vatican II. And such councils are considered to enjoy the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Those of us who decide to follow their teachings are surely the traditionalists.

Perhaps those who refuse to accept the findings and teachings of this most recent council, and, indeed, hanker for the days of the pre-conciliar Church, should be more correctly designated by yourself and others as "à la carte Catholics". - Yours, etc,
