Sir, – Former US national security adviser Michael Flynn may have heard from his Irish ancestors the proverb “A lie looks the better of having a witness”.
It challenges the powers of rational thought to think that Mr Flynn acted alone in this matter of the Russians.
President Trump now claims he knew of the problem several weeks ago but decided not to act. If that is true, then we not only have a chaotically disorganised US president but someone who is a very slow learner.
On Tuesday morning, Mr Trump tweeted about the Flynn resignation: “The real story here is why are there so many illegal leaks coming out of Washington? Will these leaks be happening as I deal on N Korea etc?”

Mr Trump, ever the master architect of falsehoods, continues with his tweets to make Mr Flynn’s lie look better. – Yours, etc,
