Madam, - In her account of the proposed memorial to the Fermoy men who died in the Great War, Mary Leland (An Irishwoman's Diary, September 25th) includes Israel in a "catalogue of foreign fields".

If this catalogue is to appear on the memorial (which is not clear) then, to avoid an anachronism that could be seen as a new attempt to blot out history, this particular field should be called Palestine. Alternatively, if only present-day names will be used, Mesopotamia should be called Iraq. It is strange that Turkey is mentioned separately from Gallipoli and the Dardanelles. Could the former Ottoman province of Syria be what is intended?

Odder still: among all the units listed by Ms Leland, there is no mention of the local regiment, the Munster Fusiliers! Surely their sacrifices are not forgotten. - Yours, etc,
