Madam, - I note that the Irish media (including The Irish Times) ignored the news from Washington DC this week of an Irish-American success story. President Bush appointed a young first-generation Irish-American as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Ed Gillespie, whose father, I understand, is from Co Donegal, was chosen to lead the Republicans into next year's crucial presidential election season in the US.

I can imagine the blanket (and favourable) coverage that would have greeted a similar appointment by the Democrats. Still, while working on Capitol Hill in 1996, I learned that the Irish media broadly see America as a one-party state - and that party ain't the GOP. - Yours etc.,
