Madam, - It is recognised that the US government is among the avant-garde in introducing democracy round the globe, most immediately in Afghanistan and Iraq.
It occurred to me while watching the news coverage of the latest efforts in the preparation of Samarra and Falluja for the forthcoming elections through the medium of coalition troops, US tanks and warplanes, that it was possible that those poor people seen scrabbling and digging with their bare hands in the carnage and rubble of their homes were actually tending the fragile shoots of democracy in Iraq. . . or not, as the case may be. - Yours, etc.,
