Madam, – National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) director Susan McKay is quoted as saying, “We refuse to allow the men who run this country to tell us that equality will have to wait”, (Breaking News, September 7th).

Could I point out that there is a woman in charge of each of three of our most important government departments – Department of Social and Family Affairs, Department of Health and Children and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (and this person is also the Tánaiste)? In addition, we have a woman as President who is in a position to refer legislation to the courts should she deem it unfit to reside under our Constitution.

In the interests of equality, therefore, could I suggest Ms McKay revisit her statement, refusing to allow “the people” who run this country to tell us that equality will have to wait. – Yours, etc,
