Enda Kenny and leading the Government

Sir, – Fine Gael should ensure that the current Taoiseach performs his final official function by presenting the American president with the bowl of shamrock on St Patrick’s Day. That takes any question of a reciprocal invitation to Mr Trump out of Mr Kenny’s hands. Problem solved. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Despite being a Labour Party supporter, I would like to thank Enda Kenny for being a true patriot who worked without rest for love of country and with great success. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – “Are we there yet?” “Are we there yet?” “Are we there yet?” Our grandson in the back of the car? No! It’s our well-informed political journalists, or “pol corrs”, speculating on the intentions of our bumbling, stumbling (but still standing) Taoiseach. Are your readers as tired of their “inside knowledge” about the future as I am, I wonder? I imagine that Enda will do as Dev did and “look into his own heart” and discover what is best for Ireland! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Enda Kenny is a savvy political operator. If his leadership rivals think he is just going to hand power over to them, they need to think again. The longer they delay, the weaker they appear to the public. As we learned in the last election, the view from Dublin is not the view that prevails in the rest of the country. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – A solution to the Taoiseach’s current situation and the Government’s desire to have continuity and experience in the Brexit negotiations would be for Mr Kenny to step down as Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael and to be reappointed in the new Cabinet as either Minister for Foreign Affairs or to a new “Ministry for Brexit”. This would be the best way to serve the country and our future. – Yours, etc,
