Sir, - Recently I attended a public meeting in Dun Laoghaire organised by a group of people known as CHUG - Coal Harbour Users' Group.

The focus of the meeting was on the boatyard, the last remaining public access to Dublin Bay, which is to be leased to a private company as part of the marina development, currently under construction in the outer harbour. I was much bemused watching each of our local councillors, of all political shades, express their appreciation to CHUG for the campaign to have the boatyard kept under public control, i.e., under the management of Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company.

Surely if these public representatives were doing their duty to protect the democratic rights of the general public, which of course would include public amenities, there would be no need for such protest meetings in the first place. - Yours, etc.,

Paul Nash, Royal Terrace East, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
