Sir, - Sean Mason, project coordinator for the Dublin Port Tunnel project with Geoconsult Arup JV, accuses me (January 15th) of making "a completely inaccurate and misleading statement" concerning their site investigation in the Marino area last year. He's right. I was inaccurate in my original letter of January 4th - but only in the manner in which I "guesstimated" the length of the avenue on which I live.

I repeat my original assertion: three boreholes drilled several hundred metres apart constitute neither a thorough nor a scientifically valid "investigation" of the precise geological conditions beneath this densely populated residential area. Nor does it reassure us that the removal of millions of cubic metres of earth will not produce serious subsidence along the tunnel route; one drilled borehole per 90 houses is scarcely an adequate "expert analysis". - Yours, etc,
