Sir, - The recent fire in the Channel Tunnel has borne out the wisdom of the previous Government's decision to opt for a twinbore tunnel, instead of the single bore tunnel recommended in the DTI strategy. As your readers are aware, it will take months to repair the damaged bore of the Channel Tunnel and in the meantime it will remain out of service. However as the tunnel is twin bore, traffic can still proceed in both directions, albeit with reduced capacity.

It does not take much imagination to realise the chaos which would result in Dublin from a similar incident, if only a single bore tunnel were built to the port. Those advocating the construction of a single bore in favour of a twin bore tunnel should think again. - Yours, etc.,
