Dublin-Navan railway line

Madam, - I read with great interest your report of November 11th on the first phase of the new Dublin-Navan railway line

Madam, - I read with great interest your report of November 11th on the first phase of the new Dublin-Navan railway line. Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey was joined by prominent Dublin and Meath footballers to launch the first stage of the work from Dublin Docklands station to Pace, via Dunboyne. This section of line is scheduled to take two years to build and will cost €160 million.

But why does a line to Navan need to be rebuilt at all, at huge cost to the taxpayer, when a fully working freight line already exists from Dublin to Navan via Drogheda?

This line is fully capable of carrying passenger trains, as match specials have regularly used it in previous years. - Yours, etc,

ANDREW FIELD, Dartmouth Walk, Dublin 6.
