Sir, The photomontage of LUAS in operation in O'Connell Street which appeared in The Irish Times (September 17th) demands close scrutiny.

In it, there are portents of the Apocalypse.

For example, the small number of pedestrians and cars on the street suggests that the time is three a.m. yet the sun is shining brightly! Odd, but perhaps not so odd as the fact that myriad spiders have spun a delicate web to provide power for a solitary anorectic tram. In the real world this web would be an ugly tangle of cables, insulators, support pillars, transformers, bus bars, interconnectors, circuit breakers and shielding.

We have spent years and megabucks getting unsightly power lines off the city streets do we really want them back again? What is more worrying are the other apocalyptic signs that the photomontage fails to show the legions of foreign visitors being decapitated as their open top double deckers cruise past the GPO, or the electrocution of the entire cast of Macnas during the Patrick's Day parade when Gulliver hits the wires.
