Sir, - The Irish Women's Environmental Network is opposed to the plan for a "waste to energy" incinerator. It believes that incineration of waste will perpetuate the throwaway mentality, rather than encouraging people to reduce, reuse, recycle.
On health grounds, the burning of certain substances will release dioxins which are carcinogenic.
We are concerned as to how the Environmental Protection Agency will define toxic waste. Will the precautionary principle be adhered to?
We believe that if further thought is not given to alternative ways of waste management, we are again insulting our children. - Yours, etc.,
