Sir, - I went to see About Adam in the Savoy cinema, O'Connell Street, Dublin last night and I was struck by the disparate images of our city. The film portrayed a vibrant, pleasant Dublin. The reality was a dirty, unpleasant city. As I walked the new, litter strewn boardwalk along the banks of the Liffey, an oncoming young man, listening to his earphones and minding his own business, was punched in the face by one of a group of three young people walking in front of me. The victim held his nose and his eyes registered pain and shock. My legs shook at the sheer random callousness of the attack. On our way home, a firework was thrown at us from a height. I used to love Dublin, but I am finding it increasingly difficult to enjoy her streets. Are litter, violence, and a general lack of respect for others to be tolerated? - Yours, etc.,Cathy Ni Riain, Malpas Terrace, Dublin 8.
