Sir, – It was sad to read your profile of the modern young student who eschews the cost of running a car in order to keep his disposable cash free for the purchase of drink ("I can count on one hand the number of my friends who drive", April 10th).
This view fits neatly with other views recently expressed that all social interaction will cease in rural Ireland if people can’t access alcohol on a night out.
We have progressed little in terms of our attitude to alcohol, and clearly another generation is coming along with the same attitude. – Yours, etc,
