Does an electric car make sense?

Sir,– I drive a small “run-about” petrol-driven car which, like myself, is elderly, and I have no intention of parting from it until it goes to the scrapyard or I go to the graveyard. At a guess, its value is less than €3,000. Most times I manage to use a tank of petrol a month. My car is serviced once a year and has passed the NCT every time.

Now, everywhere I see people driving large tank-like electric cars costing €30,000- €70,000. These, I read, take over one hour to charge up – when the driver can find a charge point – whereas my petrol fill takes five minutes. Methinks the emperors and empresses who drive these cars have no clothes. – Yours, etc,

TONY CORCORAN,
