A chara, – Many Irish Times readers are calling for the removal of Russian diplomats from Ireland. During the Cuban Missile crisis in October 1962, two factors combined to avoid a nuclear exchange. First, thanks to the US ambassador having spent so much time with Nikita Khrushchev in Moscow, he had an intelligent and correct gut instinct as to how Khrushchev thought, and how he would behave under pressure. The second factor was luck.
