Sir, - Ann Scott's splendid piece on Desert Orchid (Summer Times, July 25th) concluded: "He has also graced the lawns of Windsor Castle - not a surprising feat for a horse that even passes manure with a certain finesse."

On the very day that article appeared, Desert Orchid obliged as he paraded outside Quinns of Baltinglass to promote the causes of the Cherry Orchard Equine Centre Project in Ballyfermot and the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre in Kendal. The MC, Colm Murray of RTE, was asked to carry out an impromptu auction for the golden commodity and duly drew a top bid of £60.
