DEATH BY STONING

LOUISE KIERNAN,

LOUISE KIERNAN,

Sir, - I watched with horror and distress the news report on Amina Lawal, the Nigerian women who has lost her appeal against a Sharia court and who is now facing being stoned to death.

As a mother of a seven- month-old little girl I can only try and imagine the suffering and torture that Amina is going through. Sharia law is a guise for murder and torture against the vulnerable and powerless who are often women.

How can this court justify this sentence? This woman had a beautiful baby girl out of wedlock. This is the so-called crime that she has committed, warranting her to be tortured to death. How can this court deprive this little girl of her mother? How far do its acts of depraved barbarism go? Will it bring this little girl along to watch her mother being stoned to death?

This woman is about to lose her life. Her innocent baby girl is about to lose her mother. If we stand back and let this woman be executed our indifference and inaction makes us guilty. We must all act in what ever way we can, by pressurising our Government to use its position of power to act on behalf of the Irish people to stop this brutality against this woman and her child. -Yours, etc.,
