Madam, - We have now been told that getting rid of Saddam Hussein, a brutal tyrant, was sufficient cause for intervening militarily in Iraq. The "peace" there is costing the US $3.9 billion (yes, billion!) per month.

Yet in Liberia, where war has caused thousands of deaths, the United States says it can't find a paltry $10 million to get rid of another brutal tyrant.

The Oxfam office in Monrovia is now home for 300 desperate refugees with nothing to eat, and only occasional supplies of water as we dodge the indiscriminate shell and mortar fire. I would ask President Bush: "How can you expect the world to believe you both about Iraq and Liberia? Please be as generous to the innocent people suffering in Liberia as you have been to the Iraqi people." - Yours, etc.,

Dr BRIAN SCOTT, Chief Executive, Oxfam Ireland, 9 Burgh Quay,
