Cork Gaelscoil

Madam, – I find Elaine Byrne’s piece about the siting of a school in Cork confusing (Opinion Analysis, October 20th).

Building a school in a particular urban space may indeed be a mistake. But Ms Byrne’s concentration is on the school being a Gaelscoil. She gives a generalised view of a local problem by speaking about “the incremental segregation of our education system” by the Department of Education.

What does she mean? That Ireland is saturated with Gaelscoileanna? That the Gaelscoil is for the better-off? That some children are excluded? Her inability to spell correctly the name of the Gaelscoil in question lessens her credibility. – Yours, etc.
