COPYRIGHT AND PHOTOCOPYING

DAVID O'CALLAGHAN,

DAVID O'CALLAGHAN,

Madam, - With reference to Emmet Oliver's report on copyright fees (January 20th),writers and publishers are not losing money when students photocopy portions of books and articles, as it is unlikely that those making copies would buy the originals if photocopying were disallowed. They would use library copies and perhaps copy parts by hand.

It is important to note that "fair dealing" with copyright works is permitted under the Copyright Act of 2000. This includes copying for the purposes of private study, research, review and criticism. - Yours, etc.,

DAVID O'CALLAGHAN,
