Controversy over Corrib gas

A chara, – Top marks to Fintan O’Toole for telling it as it is

A chara, – Top marks to Fintan O’Toole for telling it as it is. His column (Opinion, February 16th) provided a balanced, informed and honest assessment of the great Corrib cover-up.

Amid the conspiracy of silence which has surrounded this scandal, it is refreshing to see a journalist letting in the light.

Madam, – Fintan O’Toole says that all parties must reach a compromise in order to unlock “a desperately-needed economic and financial resource for the public good”. Why therefore is he bashing Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan?

Mr Ryan is committed to facilitating the development of our indigenious natural resources and achieving security of our energy supplies. For example, he has set a very ambitious target to achieve 40 per cent of our electricity needs generated from renewable sources by 2020. But fossil fuels, such as natural gas, will remain critically important in making up the other 60 per cent. We currently import 95 per cent of our gas and are dangerously vulnerable. Gas is also the cleanest of our fossil fuels.

Mr Ryan has a clear vision that we need to move towards a greener, smart economy to help secure our long-term economic recovery. The Minister’s efforts to help exploit our indigenous energy resources such as natural gas and invest in renewable energies are commendable and should be supported.
