Sir, – Róisín Shortall is to be congratulated, both for the content of her speech and for her courage in making it (Home News, September 20th).

What is the Dáil for, if not for honourable analysis such as this? It would behove commentators and politicians to focus on these serious issues and real decisions facing us in relation to the sort of country we want to live in, and to pay less attention to whipping up the “what-about-ery”/ “yer either with us or agin us”/“party-line” political commentary with which they are all so comfortable.

For those suffering as a result of bad decisions, it is not a game. We elect our TDs to make these decisions conscientiously in the interests of the people.

For once the Dáil chamber was used for its proper purpose when a true parliamentarian set out in a measured way the choices which have to be made now in our democracy. – Yours, etc,

MARY CONNELL,
