Sir, - In the context of the current debate regarding asylum-seekers, I am amazed to witness the insensitive employment of African men as "washroom assistants" in many of Dublin's trendier bars.

For those unaware of this phenomenon, their basic duty involves offering the customer a paper towel in a servile manner, while looking forlornly towards their tray of tips.

I find this exploitation extremely distasteful and a symptom of the racism that is rife in Ireland at present throughout the social spectrum.

Do the much talked-of "Celtic kittens" who frequent these bars really feel the need for such outdated colonial trappings? - Yours, etc., Keith Mitchell,
