Madam, - Robert O'Byrne's review of Jennie Churchill: Winston's American Mother by Anne Sebba (Books, November 10th) makes passing references to her residing in Dublin and to the existence of Winston's only brother, Jack. One could add the largely forgotten facts that Jack was born in Dublin in 1880 and that Winston spent most of his first five years in Dublin.

Jack Churchill married into an old Catholic family and his first child became the first Catholic Churchill since the Reformation when he was baptised in Westminster Cathedral in the presence of his uncle Winston. Jack Churchill died in 1947, having lived with his brother in 10 Downing Street during the war years.

His daughter subsequently married Anthony Eden, the prime minister during the Suez crisis. - Yours, etc,
