Sir, – May I suggest we Catholics initiate a maximum 10-year papacy, to enable a person of any age to be appointed and justified, to encourage regional recognition, and to restore faith, hope and clarity. – Yours, etc,

BARRY HURLEY,

Templeogue Road,

Dublin 6W.

Sir, – In writing that a Vatican instruction to preserve the use of Latin is “more honoured in the breach than the observance” Kieron Wood (February 13th) clearly means that it has been frequently disregarded, but Shakespeare intended the phrase to have a different meaning.

When Hamlet says that the Danish custom of boozy revelry is “More honour’d in the breach than the observance” he sees that it is more honourable to ignore the custom of drunken carousing than to follow it.

Thus, Shakespeare refers to a practice that is more honourably ignored than followed – not one that is more often ignored. – Yours, etc,
