Sir, - If this amendment goes through and the proposal becomes law, have I cause to be uneasy for my personal freedom? If it happens that I am (wrongfully or mistakenly) arrested and charged with a serious offence, I can then be detained in custody pending my trial - for an indeterminate period.
Which I am eventually tried and found to be not guilty, I am then released - just like that! In that event, I think it is only fair that I warn the Irish taxpayer that I will sue for wrongful imprisonment and, in the words of today, I would be seeking damages.
