Sir, - In Louise East's excellent "Kulturkampf in Mitteleuropa" (The Irish Times, October 25th) she mistakenly states that the Romans founded the city of Vienna. The original settlement was founded by the Celts around 400 BC and called "Vindobona" (Whitefield). About 15 BC the invading Romans retained this name, from which "Vienna" (Wien) is derived. - Yours, etc.,
