Sir , – It is insulting to our intelligence for Cardinal George Pell to expect us to believe that he remained ignorant of the historical widespread clerical sex abuse endemic in the Australian Catholic Church because he was deceived by priests, a bishop and even an archbishop about this reality while he stealthily climbed the hierarchical ladder to become Australia's most senior cleric ("Cardinal insists he was 'kept in dark' about child abuse", March 4th).
Pope Francis cannot allow this cloud to remain over his papacy. – Yours, etc,
