Sir, - There has been much discussion regarding car insurance, and rightly those who drive without insurance should be rigorously pursued and heavily fined. But is it not time that the whole question of car insurance was radically re-examined?

Say a driver pays a premium of £1,000 per annum for car insurance why not make it £250, but make the driver responsible for the first £750 of any repairs. You can then do away with the no claim bonus and it will introduce more discipline amongst drivers instead of simply having a quick exchange of insurance details when relatively minor damage is incurred in an accident. Furthermore, garages will cease to ask you whether the repairs are for an insurance claim, when the cost of repairs is inevitably greater. It will reduce the cost of repairs.

Is it too simple a solution for the insurance market? - Yours, etc.,
