Sir, - The Lord Mayor of Dublin is reported (The Irish Times, September 2nd) as defending the plans of those purporting to be concerned about our city who are trying to impose a car-free day without either proper consultation or public support. He justifies his position by asserting that "we are becoming a nation of overweight children and obese adults".

The Lord Mayor should explain to the public how preventing people from using their cars between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when children are at school, will make them less overweight. He should also explain why the prohibitions on car drivers during the morning peak are exempted from the restrictions. The truth is that these restrictions will not make commuters less obese and that the public transport system has insufficient capacity to take those wishing to transfer from their cars to public transport.

Our city has a world-class economy and Third-World infrastructure and it is time our politicians caught up with the real working city before they are further discredited. - Yours, etc.,

Brian Goff, Chairman, Dublin City Centre Business Association, Dawson Street, Dublin 2.
