Sir, - In publishing the fine photograph of a camel race in your sports section of July 18th, you were probably not aware that there is an Irishman in your picture.

The large white camel on the left is Legs, ridden by my grandson, Crispin Gargan, and he came second in the race.

Incidentally, the same combination also came second in the prestigious Camel Cup at Alice Springs on July 11th, 1998, the winner being another of his camels, Jessie, ridden by Crispin's prospective brother-in-law, thus winning for him the coveted "Quennella" for winning first and second in the Cup. Crispin was formerly a member of the Northern Territory Police, which he gave up only last year to take up camel riding. In case you doubt his Irishness, he was born in Cork when his parents were on a visit home! - Yours, etc., Mabel Gargan,

Rowan Hall, Milltown, Dublin 6.
