Sir, - Gary Byrnes (January 29th) makes some interesting points on the broadcasting of the Angelus on RTE. In this context, it is worth considering what our Constitution has to say under the heading of religion. Article 44, section 2, sub section (2), states quite simply: "The State guarantees not to endow any religion." The word endow means, according to Chamber's Concise Dictionary, "to provide permanent provision or means of support for, to enrich with any gift or faculty." Enough said?

Since RTE is a State-owned organisation, it is obvious that the State is breaking its own rules. In other words, it is in breach of the Constitution through the activities of RTE in this matter.

Changes must therefore be made. Can we look forward to a response from RTE's director-general or from the relevant Cabinet Minister? - Yours, etc.,
