British soldiers killed in the Rising

Sir, – The sentiments expressed by Minister for Foreign Affair Charlie Flanagan are right and proper 100 years after the events with which they are concerned ("We must acknowledge British soldiers killed in the Rising", Opinion & Analysis, May 26th). He is, however, in error on two specific matters. The first is that Lieut Gerald Neilan did not serve with the "Royal British Fusiliers" (sic) as no such regiment existed then or at any other time; he served in the 10th battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. The second is that he describes the soldiers of the Sherwood Foresters as "raw recruits". This is very unlikely as "raw recruits" would still be in training at the regimental depot and would not have been serving in a battalion. What is more likely is that those young soldiers would have been specifically trained for trench warfare on the Western Front and not for street fighting in one of the British Empire's major cities. – Yours, etc,
