Sir, - Angela Lemass wonders (January 27th) why we are hearing nothing from the local authorities which will have to collect and dispose of the extra cartons due to Premier Dairies' plans to close the last milk-bottling plant in Dublin.

My local councillor asked the county manager for Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown on December 21st last whether there was "any policy in relation to persuading companies to use glass bottles rather than TetraPaks", and received this reply: "Matters such as the proposals contained in the motion could be considered on a national basis by the Department of Environment and Local Government. There are many complex and inter-related issues involved in the selection of the optimum material for use in the packaging of individual products."

So that's what the council thinks. And sure, aren't they right? Won't the problem be solved "on a national basis" if the mega-dump is built in Silvermines? And sure isn't Silvermines over 100 miles away from our back yard? - Yours, etc., David Campbell,
