Madam, - Like Maurice Ahern (July 2nd) I attended the Dublin-Derry match in Clones last Saturday and heard the chorus of boos that greeted the Taoiseach when the public announcer instructed us to "welcome" him.

No one doubts the Taoiseach's long-held passion for all sports. However, despite Maurice Ahern's assertion that he finds it difficult to understand why the booing took place, I think the answer is quite simple.

The Taoiseach presides over a morally corrupt administration that has failed miserably in its duty to govern this country. As another chance to register opposition may not come around again until the next general election, people took the opportunity of letting him know what they think of him.

No amount of spin, tales of gooseberry-picking, or focus-group campaign targeting can hide that. The truth hurts.
