Madam, – In all the controversy regarding bonuses, it seems sight has been lost of the headline given by the Government two full years ago in attempting to totally abolish the bonus culture.

It eliminated the Christmas bonus of an extra week’s payment to social welfare recipients in mid-December, amounting to the tidy sum of a couple of hundred euro per individual.

It is regrettable that the message of this laudable action to get the country’s finances under control does not appear to have got through to the banks.

Oops, sorry, I forgot that this same Government now owns and/or controls these banks. – Yours, etc,
