Bill to ban fur farming

Sir, – Three cheers to Solidarity – People Before Profit for bringing forward a Bill this week to ban fur farming in Ireland.

This violent and bloody industry confines some 200,000 minks to tiny, filthy wire cages for their entire lives.

They exist in this miserable state until their lungs are finally filled with poison gas – all so that someone can wear a frivolous fashion accessory that no one needs and, increasingly, almost no one wants.

Fur farming has no place in modern Ireland.

I call on readers to contact their TDs to urge them to support this vital piece of legislation so that this archaic industry can finally be relegated to the history books. – Yours, etc,

JOHN CARMODY,
