Sir, - You reported (February 8th) on A&L Goodbody's refusal to furnish details of their hourly rate charged for attendance at the Beef Tribunal. Ms Caroline Preston, a senior partner with this firm, is quoted as saying that we, as taxpayers "had no right to know the details of the bill, even though we were being asked to foot the bill."

Such arrogance! Just who does Ms Preston think she is? If I am paying a bill, I am fully entitled to be given a detailed break down of all charges. if this is typical of the way the legal profession conducts its business, then it's high time serious changes were made to its business practices.

The chairman of the Bar Council, Mr James Nugent, would do well to carry out a full investigation into this matter. Otherwise it will only confirm public antipathy towards the legal profession. - Yours, etc.,
