Sir, - Your Political Correspondent reports today (August 21st) on the "spectacular overnight success" of the plastic bag levy. The fall in the consumption of plastic bags is welcome.
However, as the supermarkets have not provided their customers with alternative paper bags, I wonder how much extra profits the Minister generated for them by saving them the cost of buying one billion bags a year. He could have collected this saving as a levy on the supermarkets and put it to good use. Let nobody say that the supermarkets used the savings to reduce prices. - Yours, etc.,
