Angelus on RTE Television

Madam, - I hold a current TV licence

Madam, - I hold a current TV licence. While waiting for the six o'clock news each evening I have to watch zombies on for a full minute. This is RTE's present television interpretation of the Angelus.

I have no objection to the Angelus on RTE or elsewhere. For most Christians the Angelus commemorates the genesis of Christianity. But I object to being forced to watch zombies. Some of these zombies look skywards as if the space shuttle was about to appear. Others suddenly cease whatever they are doing and blindly stare into space.

The Angelus has nothing whatsoever to do with zombies; ask the angel Gabriel who is the patron saint of communications.

The previous practice of using Christian icons and other relevant works of art to the sound of the Angelus bell in the background seemed much more appropriate, dignified and in keeping with the subject. It was not offensive.

Why, then, does the senior management of RTE insist on parading zombies to celebrate the Angelus? I do not know the answer to this - unless, of course, they are also zombies. - Yours, etc.,
