Madam, - Having taken return flights with both Aer Lingus and Ryanair over the last week, I am dismayed at the thought that the first impression that many visitors to our country form is based on the courtesy (or lack thereof) of the staff of our two main airlines.

The view seems to prevail that if you are paying a lower fare than 10 years ago, you are no longer entitled to the same courteous welcome as in those days. Imagine my surprise when I realised that the higher fare was actually used to pay staff to have good manners.

Perhaps both airlines would consider providing their customers with a courteous welcome as an optional extra - at a small additional charge, of course. - Yours, etc,
