A chara, – I would strongly disagree with Niall O'Dowd's suggestion that we need a US envoy now more than ever (Opinion & Analysis, September 4th). I would argue that we do not need a US envoy while Mr Trump is in power. We will manage this quite well without the US.

Sir, – The idea of a US envoy to Northern Ireland, while laudable in other circumstances, falls at the first hurdle of who Donald Trump is capable of sending to fill the role.
