A modest proposal

Madam, – If the Government abolished second and third-level education they would save billions of euro. It would also result in an unskilled workforce with low expectations. This would enable our economy to compete with low-cost countries that are taking our jobs at present.

Of course there would be a shortage of skilled workers and professionals, but this could be filled – at no cost to the exchequer – by the highly skilled immigrants who are doing menial jobs at the moment, and they would work for lower wages and salaries than the home-produced variety.

This should satisfy the employers, the economists and Ibec, and the rest of us would be too ignorant to know the difference. – Yours, etc,
